Professor of Percussion

Mark Goodenberger (MM), percussionist and composer, is the Chair of the Music Department and Director of Percussion Studies at Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Washington. As a specialist in Symphonic and Chamber music, he has worked with composers such as Steve Reich, Libby Larsen, Chen Yi, George Crumb, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Elliott Carter, Lou Harrison, Zhou Long, Tomas Svoboda, Forrest Pierce, and Chinary Ung, premiering many new works.

Goodenberger is also active as a baroque specialist, performing the kettledrums with the Portland Baroque Orchestra, Pacific Music Works, and Vancouver Early Music. He is a Yamaha performing artist, a member of the Vic Firth Education team, and is proud to endorse the Goodenberger G-LINE Mix marimba mallets made by Amy Putnam Mallets.

His book, Just the 4 of Us, for beginning 4-mallet marimba players is published with MalletWorks publishing. He is also published by Marimba Productions Inc, HoneyRock Publishing, and Wild Cheetah Productions. He holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Lewis and Clark College and a Master of Music Performance degree from the University of Michigan.

Josh Gianola is a percussionist and educator in Washington State. He holds positions as Lecturer of Percussion Studies at Central Washington University, and principal percussionist of the Yakima and Walla Walla Symphony Orchestras. An active freelancer, Josh regularly plays as an extra percussionist with the Oregon Symphony, Spokane Symphony, and has been a guest principal percussionist for the Mid-Columbia and Newport Symphony Orchestras.

Josh holds a Master of Music degree in Percussion Performance from Portland State University, and a Bachelor of Music Performance from Central Washington University. He resides in Ellensburg, Washington with his wife, violinist Vanessa Moss, their black lab Gilly, and their cat, Cat. His principal teachers are Jon Greeney, Joel Bluestone, and Mark Goodenberger.

Multi-faceted artist and percussionist Dr. Reese Rylan Maultsby (b. 1995) is enjoying a wide range of success throughout his career as an educator, performer, and composer. His students at A.C. Davis High School (WA) won best percussion at the WSU Marching Band Championships in 2018 as well as first-place in the large percussion ensemble category of the 2019 Washinton State Solo and Ensemble Contest. Shortly after, he served as the Lecturer in Music for percussion at Washington and Lee University (VA), then Assistant Instructor at The University of Texas. Currently, Dr. Maultsby serves as Assistant Professor of Percussion at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas.

Professionally, Maultsby has played drum-set on cruises across the world with Holland America Lines, served as a percussionist with the American Festival Orchestra during the China and Mongolia tour, and is a founding member of the recent chamber group The Austin Percussion Collective. He has continually been involved with the marching arts as a teacher and arranger, working with groups like the Columbians Drum and Bugle Corps, Jeff Chambers Music, and multiple high schools and universities throughout the country. The University of Texas Percussion Ensemble has premiered recent compositions of his, and he is continually writing solo, chamber, and ensemble works for himself and others.

Before earning his DMA from the University of Texas, Reese received two bachelors degrees in both music education and percussion performance from Central Washington University, as well as a masters degree from James Madison University. His primary mentors and instructors are Mark Goodenberger, Casey Cangelosi, Dr. Thomas Burritt, and Ivan Trevino. Outside of percussion, you can find him rock climbing, disc golfing, or enjoying some espresso at a local coffee shop!

Chaiya D. Odle is a percussionist, educator, and composer born and raised in Washington State, but recently moved to the LA area to continue her career and be close to her friends and loved ones in California. She grew up with a diverse set of experiences and training in multiple genres, such as orchestral, jazz, and marching percussion. She is currently freelancing in the LA area with performing groups, running an online private lesson studio, and teaching at South Hill High School. In the past, she taught percussion ensembles at multiple high schools and middle schools in the Pacific Northwest, Southern California, and at Pacific Crest and POW Perucssion in 2022.

​In the symphonic world, Chaiya has performed as a soloist with the South Sound Symphonic Band, the principal timpanist of the Central Washington Symphony Orchestra, and as a section member with the Central Washington Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Winds, and Symphonic Band. She has performed with percussion ensembles at Pacific Lutheran University, Central Washington University, and her greatest passion has been performing in a marimba duo with her brother, Bobby Odle, creating arrangements of many romantic and impressionistic piano works by Chopin and Debussy. In her youth, she performed as principal percussionist in the Western International Band Clinic and as a section member for all of the other three years, in addition to being in the All Northwest Honor Band and Orchestra, and going to WMEA Solo and Ensemble State competitions all four years she was eligible. 

In the marching world, her performance experience includes both front ensemble and battery percussion at Eruption Indoor (‘16-17), IMPACT Percussion (‘18-20), CWU Marching Band(‘17-20), Vessel Percussion(‘21), Broken City Percussion(‘22), Columbians Drum and Bugle Corps(‘18,20), and Blue Knights Drum and Bugle Corps(‘19). 

Chaiya studied percussion performance privately with Dr. Miho Takekawa, Storm Benjamin, and Mark Goodenberger over nine years. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music in 2022 with a Minor in Sociology. 

Thomas Snedeker is originally from Ellensburg, Washington, but moved to Eugene in 2022 to pursue a Master’s Degree in Percussion Performance at the University of Oregon. He currently holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Percussion Performance from Central Washington University. Thomas’ musical interests encompass solo, orchestral, and marching percussion. In 2023 he was awarded a Section Percussion position with the Yakima Symphony Orchestra in Yakima, WA. He is also a Section Percussionist with Orchestra Next and the Eugene Concert Choir Orchestra. Other groups he has performed with around the state of Oregon include the Eugene Symphony, Beaverton Symphony, Portland-Columbia Symphony, and the Oregon Mozart Players. He was recently selected as the first prize winner of the 2024 Eugene Symphony Guild Legacy Young Artist Competition. Thomas’ primary instructors have been Mark Goodenberger (CWU), Pius Cheung (UO), and Ian Kerr (UO). When he is not performing in concert halls, Thomas can be found playing drums at church, playing golf, and exploring Eugene with his wife, Noëlle.
